What does the Bible say about dancing unto the Lord?

Scripturally, the use of dance expresses love, joy, thanksgiving, praise and worship. Many forms of dance can be used to glorify God. As with song and prayer dance also contributes to bringing the Spirit of God for comfort, healing, spiritual warfare etc.

There are many scriptural references to dance in the Bible. The earliest mention of dance as a form of worship is recorded in Exodus when the nation of Israel just crossed the Red Sea.

"And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dances". Exodus 15:20

David also refers to dance as a form of worship.
Psalm 149:3 - "Let them praise his name in dance: let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp".

Psalm 150:4 - "Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with the stringed instruments".

David also danced before the Lord.
"And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod". 2 Samuel 6:14

Both Jesus and Paul said numerous times that they taught from the scriptures, referring to the Old Testament. They were also familiar with Jewish worship. Indications are that the New Testament church gained much of its style of worship from Jewish believers who understood dance as part of worship. To some degree dance has existed thoughout church history.
